More about Rob (AKA CHAPPERS)
“UK rock musician Rob Chapman knows almost as much about reaching an audience online as he does about shredding in the pentatonic scale.” – Forbes
The dedicated community who pushed his YouTube channel to over 280 million views and 730k subscribers affectionally know him as “Chappers”. But Rob Chapman is likely to become as recognised as leader of the dusty road blues rock trio Clockwork Wolf & Co. and the trippy Monkey Lord, as he is for his Chapman Guitars, his warm and charismatic instructional videos, and his two decades among the vibrant and passionate players of the worldwide guitar family.
As he’s described himself, he’s the founder and owner of Chapman guitars; frontman and guitarist for Clockwork Wolf & Co, Dorje, and Monkey Lord; a demonstrator for Andertons Music and Thomann. A husband and father, Chapman is as keen to talk Eastern philosophy, esoterism, and martial arts as he is studio indulgences like coffee and pizza and of course, guitar playing.
Raised by musician parents, the Wiltshire, UK guitarist caught the bug himself when an uncle introduced him to the music of Black Sabbath. At 16, the Dungeons & Dragons obsessed teen was gifted his first guitar, learned some chords, and began to jam with a couple of mates at school.
When one of those friends, Alex, took his own life, Rob made a vow to himself to continue playing in his honour. Months of mourning and depression were treated with intense study of riffs and licks, locked away in his bedroom. Processing that sadness was pivotal to “clicking” with his instrument. Factory labor earned him enough cash to enroll in a newly opened guitar school.
After graduating from the Institute of Contemporary Music Performance in London, Rob made a name for himself as a session player capable of handling everything from classic rock and blues to neo-classical virtuoso shred. His easygoing attitude, dedication to his craft, and serious chops earned him positions on projects spearheaded by A-list producers, including Eddie Kramer (Bowie, Clapton), Todd Burke (Ben Harper, Jack Johnson), and Nick Tauber (Thin Lizzy, Marillion).
The instrumental Monkey Lord is an ambient soundscape exploration of Chapman’s mild form of synesthesia, or as he puts it, “me trying to sing through my hands.” By contrast, the vocal, guitar, bass, and drum oriented Clockwork Wolf & Co began as a means to do justice to music Chapman first wrote in his twenties, inspired by the bluesy rock of Jimi Hendrix and Fleetwood Mac cofounder Peter Green and the melodic grunge of Soundgarden and Alice In Chains. The overwhelmingly positive response to the debut EP from Clockwork Wolf & Co, In the Sunshine, and its accompanying singles and music videos, has made a new full-length album inevitable.
While each entity is separate and distinct from one another, there is a bit of thematic continuity. Clockwork Wolf & Co is philosophically set in a fantastical steampunk vision of the past, with the artwork and lyrics doing the heavy lifting in terms of worldbuilding and lore. Monkey Lord envisions a post-apocalyptic future devoid of human beings, where the natural world expands.
Like his initial study of the guitar as means of exorcising depression, the music of Clockwork Wolf & Co is a place to purge anger, sadness, and any darker emotions that need to be handled. Consequently, like the tradition of all of the best music, Chapman’s personal examinations offer catharsis and healing to any listener who is experiencing loss or suffering in their own daily lives.
As the band leader, visionary, entrepreneur, and YouTube raconteur once told Forbes, “I’m just a dude who plays guitar in a flat in England and I never knew that it would be like this.”
